Layers

Structured analysis pipelines for detecting and measuring objects

View
Definition
An analysis is one or more layers, and each layer detects one type of object and measures it. Inside a layer, engines sit in six categories that run in a fixed order, from Pre-Processing to Measurements. An engine can use images from its own category or an earlier one. Layers share images only through Import engines. Dependencies, whether between engines or between layers, may never form a circle.

How It Works

Each layer is a set of engines in six categories:

  1. Pre-Processing
  2. Detection
  3. Post Processing
  4. Manual Correction
  5. Measurements Masks
  6. Measurements

When a sample or ROI is analyzed, layers that depend on no other layer run first, and the rest follow their dependencies. Inside a layer, analysis moves through the categories from Pre-Processing to Measurements, and inside a category, engines run in order of their dependencies.

Most engines process the sample one field of viewLoading... at a time, typically in parallel, and store their image results per field. A layer can also run on a downscaled image to save time. Its outputs are then resized back to full resolution, and Measurements always use the original resolution.

Simplified

A layer is a recipe for finding one kind of object and measuring it. Its steps come in six groups that always run in the same order, from preparing the image to measuring what was found.

A Grammar for Analysis

The word grammar tends to bring back school drills: rules to memorize and errors to avoid. But grammar is what lets a modest set of words say an unlimited number of things. Once you know how a sentence is built, every new word you learn adds to what you can say, and you can understand sentences you have never seen before.

Layers give StrataQuest that kind of structure. Every layer is built the same way: six categories in a fixed order, with engines filling them the way words fill the parts of a sentence.

Open an analysis someone else built and you already know where to look: what prepares the image, what is detected, what is corrected, and what is measured. Learning compounds, too. A new engine adds a word and leaves the rules unchanged, so your range grows with every engine you learn.

Ambitious analyses stay clear, because layers linked through Import engines are built from parts that are each simple to read on their own. And teaching can start from the structure: a beginner learns the six categories first, and every example, demonstration, and analysis they meet after that reinforces the same pattern.

Where a script or a free-form pipeline can take any shape, a StrataQuest analysis always has a shape you can recognize. The structure lets you build an analysis, explain it, and hand it to someone else.

Simplified

Layers work like a grammar: a structure that lets a set of building blocks express almost anything. Learn how one layer is put together and you can read, build, and explain any analysis.

Linking Layers

An engine can use only images defined in its own layer. To bring in a result from another layer, such as a mask computed once and used by two analyses, add an Import engine and choose the layer and the image. As with engines, circular dependencies between layers are not allowed.

Simplified

Layers are separate, but one can borrow an image from another through an Import engine.
