Landmark

Bregma

The skull landmark that anchors brain coordinates

Definition
The anatomical landmark on the skull where the coronal and sagittal sutures intersect, serving as the zero-reference point for anterior-posterior and medial-lateral stereotaxic coordinates in rodent neuroscience.
Suture Intersection
Where coronal and sagittal skull sutures meet
AP Zero Point
Defines the origin for anterior-posterior measurements

Why Bregma Matters

Bregma is the origin point of the stereotaxic coordinate system. During surgery, it is visible as the intersection of skull suture lines. During post-hoc analysis, PanoBrain's atlas registration effectively reverse-maps each section back to its Bregma-relative position, enabling:

  • Precise AP-level identification of each scanned section
  • Comparison of the same brain region across different animals
  • Correlation of histological findings with surgical injection coordinates
